to the portal of the BINDU-ART Project
The social art initiative was founded in February 2005, in the leprosy colony Bharatapuram in South India.
The Bindu-Art project was designed to use art as a new way of life for people affected by leprosy. Through the painting of pictures at international exhibitions, as well as locally and online, the students attain financial independence without the discrimination of receiving alms.

In a snowball effect the students of the BINDU-ART-SCHOOL-movement support similarly affected individuals with a part of their income and teach them, what they have learned. For leprosy effected people this unique process far away from charity means a resurrection into a life, in which they are met with esteem and respect.
The students between 25 - 94 years, mostly illiterates from different religions, begin the daily classes with meditation.
Intensive life experiences and internal qualities flow into their impressive paintings. Their immediate, naive, innocent and spontaneous work of art is touching and witty at the same time. The simplicity of their ideas, the use of space and texture is tinged with inner beauty.
In India about 0,5 million people who were infected with leprosy since the last 20 years live as “untouchables”. Mostly they are pushed to the edge of the society and are dependent on alms. Although leprosy is a curable illness, a social stigma is still existent.
With a documentary-film, a book, exhibitions and this portal the attention is brought to the reality and the artistic quality of “untouchables” and it tries to inspire people to an active participation in this exchange of material and immaterial values
Independent from party political, religious communities and traditions, we wish you a pleasant stay at the BINDU-portal and would be very happy, if it would lead to an active participation in the project.

We would like to contradict the assumption that an organization with large financial expenditure stands behind this very extensive project. The entire monthly expenditure for personnel as well as office and school building rent in Austria and India of about € 1.000,-- should show, that this is not the case. The incomes from the picture as well as the book sales and any financial support are used exclusively for the students, for painting measures and the further development of the project.
